LGBT Heritage Month marked its fourth year of celebration at Los Angeles City Hall on the morning of Friday, May 30th, 2014. A diverse gathering of over 100 spectators gathered at City Hall to witness the special occasion. City Council President Herb Wesson opened the council meeting and announced the commemoration, at which point the lead sponsors of the event—City Controller Ron Galperin and Councilmembers Mike Bonin and Mitch O’Farrell—walked in from the back of the Chambers, followed by the Honorees. As a surprise to many, the group was escorted to the podium by a live Mariachi. All were greeted with a standing ovation from friends and supporters, after which L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti officially started the proceedings.
Mayor Garcetti presented awards to Jason Collins (the first openly gay player in the NBA), former City Clerk June Lagmay, Youth Advocate Carlos Sosa, Rabbi Lisa Edwards of Beth Chayim Chadashim, Community Leaders Mignon Moore and Elaine Harley, and Rabbi Denise Eger.
“The spirit of Los Angeles is a spirit that celebrates that diversity,” Garcetti said. “We’re stronger for it. We know it. We cherish it. We welcome all who wish to be who they are.”
After the ceremony attendees gathered for a reception in the City Hall forecourt, which was emceed by Board of Public Works President Kevin James.
